Behind the Judge’s Table: What I Learned at Exotic Generation – Malta

Behind the Judge’s Table: What I Learned at Exotic Generation – Malta

Just last month, September 20–21, I had the incredible opportunity to be part of Exotic Generation – Malta as a sponsor. Two full days, over 100 competitors, and seven categories of pole dance artistry—it was an unforgettable event.

What made it even more special for me was getting to hang out with the judges. Between watching the performances and chatting with them about how scoring actually works, I walked away with a brand-new appreciation for the competition world. And today, I want to share some of those insights with you—whether you’re stepping on stage for the first time or you’re a seasoned competitor looking to level up.

The Structure of the Competition

Exotic Generation breaks performances down into categories:

  • Flow – smooth, seamless transitions and mesmerizing choreography.
  • Old School – sensual, sexy, suggestive exotic style.
  • Theater – storytelling, drama, and stage presence.
  • Hard Style – sharp, powerful, trick-focused routines.
  • Doubles – pairs performing in perfect sync.
  • Men – strength, artistry, and individuality.
  • Stars – often reserved for well-known performers showcasing mastery.

Each category has amateur, semi-pro, and pro levels, which keeps the playing field fair and encourages dancers at every stage of their journey. With 50 competitors on the first day and 65 on the second, the variety was huge—no two routines were alike.

Four Judges, Four Styles

One thing I loved was how each of the four judges had their own dance background and signature style. That means scoring wasn’t about making every routine fit into one narrow mold—it was about recognizing artistry across perspectives. Some judges focused on fluidity, some on originality, some on musicality, and some on technique.

But despite their differences, they all agreed on a few key points every competitor should know.

What the Judges Want to See

Flow

This category isn’t about packing in tricks—it’s about creating a mesmerizing dance. Tricks can be included, but only if they connect seamlessly to your choreography and music. If a trick is messy or forced, it won’t score you points (since tricks aren’t required here) and can actually hurt your score. Flow is about magic in movement.

Old School

Think sensual, sexy, suggestive—the kind of performance that makes the room feel turned on. Every detail counts: if your kneepads, outfit, or styling clash with the vibe, judges will notice and deduct points. Old School is about authenticity in exotic expression.

Hard Style

This is the tricks-heavy category, but more doesn’t always mean better. Judges value dynamics, control, and clean execution. Sometimes it’s smarter to perfect the tricks you own rather than attempt ones you can’t land with polish. And remember—don’t pause after a big move. Keep the energy alive by connecting the landing with the music.

Theater, Doubles, Men, and Stars

These categories each carry their own focus—whether it’s storytelling, synchronization, strength, or mastery—but the golden rule is the same: respect the essence of the division you’re entering.

Beyond Tricks: The Total Package

Over and over, I heard the judges emphasize that a winning performance is about more than pole moves. It’s about the whole picture:

  • Music: Choose tracks that fit your category and support your storytelling.
  • Styling: Hair, makeup, and costume should match the vibe. (A fairy-like flow look in a Hard Style routine? Doesn’t make sense!)
  • Showmanship: From the moment you walk on stage, you’re performing. Be memorable, be polished, and own your presence.

My Takeaway

Being at Exotic Generation – Malta reminded me that pole competitions aren’t just about medals—they’re about artistry, storytelling, and connection. Every competitor brought something personal, and the judges’ role was to honor that while rewarding excellence.

If you’re planning to compete, remember: judges aren’t there to tear you down. They’re looking for reasons to give you points. Help them do that by showing up polished, prepared, and unapologetically yourself.

✨ To everyone who performed in Malta—you inspired me. And to future competitors: may these behind-the-scenes insights give you the edge to shine on stage.
